CHAPTER 8

Max loved being able to come into the office at 8am. It was a luxury, one that she was never allowed back when she worked for Lucas and his 6:00am days. It was too bad this was the last time she’d be able to do it. She had a plan, and it would cost her everything.

She and Fade walked out of the elevator, and onto the A&R floor. As they passed the receptionist desk, Max addressed Jennifer. “Set a meeting with Mr. Lucas for today at his earliest convenience. Once it’s set up, take the rest of the day off.”

Jennifer blinked. “Max?”

“You heard me.” The gossips in the bathroom had pegged Jen as the source of the rumours. The snake couldn’t be trusted, but she could be useful. Max wanted her gone, but Max also wanted Jen on her side. “Set up the meeting, then enjoy the day.”

“Yes, Max.”

Max and Fade walked into the office and Max all but collapsed into the chair. “Nice, isn’t it? Gonna miss it. We didn't even get a chance to christen it."

“We don’t have to do this,” Fade said. “It’s not worth it.”

“You’re worth it.” Max’s tone was stone and steel. “I’m worth it. Protecting other girls is worth it.”

Jennifer poked her head in. "Mr. Lucas said he has an opening at 9:30."

"Perfect. We'll be there." Max watched Fade fidget. She stood up. "C'mere, I want to show you something." She stood by the window and Fade joined her. "What do you see?"

"Silver City?"

"You're right. And where are we?"

"The JHL Productions Tower."

Max smiled. Fade knew how to play this game better than she had. It was time to add a new rule.

She leaned in and whispered into Fade's ear. "Lucas asked me these same questions in his office. Right before he smacked my ass and grabbed my chest and pushed me against the window. He pulled up my skirt. Undid his pants. I shoved him away and said no. He fired me. He looks down on one of the wealthiest cities from the top floor of his tower. He doesn't deserve his power to hurt people. Control people. Decide who's career thrives and who is forgotten."

Fade's silent tears streamed down her cheeks. "If we have to lose everything, so does he." She nodded and dabbed at her eyes with her sleeves. "Give me 10 minutes. I can do this."

They walked into Lucas’ office promptly on time. He was standing at his drink trolly, pouring for the three of them.

Fade wrinkled her nose. “It’s 9:30 in the morning.”

“It’s business.” He held out the two glasses filled with caramel coloured alcohol.

“I’m sober now,” Max lied.

“I’m on a cleanse.” Fade said.

“Come on, girls. You can’t let fine stuff like this go to waste.”

“I guess you’re going to have to have it all to yourself then,” Max said innocently as she and Fade took their seats by the desk. She watched as Lucas drank both glasses. So, they weren’t spiked after all.

“If you’re ready to begin?” Max said.
